Volunteer and Coach Training

Training is important for safety

Check the Training Program Calendar under 'Events'

RDA is committed to providing quality training for their volunteers.  Training includes regular sessions at your RDA centre to update volunteer knowledge and skills.  Let your Coach, Volunteer Coordinator or committee member know about the types of training you would like presented.

Some ideas include:

  • have an accredited saddle fitter present a demonstration
  • ask your farrier to demonstrate hoof care and shoeing
  • invite the Equine Dentist to show volunteers about teeth care
  • invite your local Vet to talk about health care
  • invite a teacher, carer or physiotherapist to discuss a particular disability and how volunteers can assist riders with that disability
  • regularly practice emergency dismounts
  • regularly practice an evacuation drill
  • train a horse to lead correctly
  • invite a State Office staff member to talk about their role and RDA policies
  • watch an RDA video - there's many to choose from
  • read the Volunteer Information Booklet or other recommended books for RDA Volunteers

RDA SA delivers a regular program of training for volunteers and coaches around the State.  All volunteers are welcome to attend.  Some of these workshops include:

State RDA Coaching Workshop (once per year) - guest presenters deliver training on horse care, teaching riding skills, safety, and disabilities.

Disabilities Workshop (every two years) - RDA SA presents a comprehensive program on the range of disabilities commonly encountered within RDA and how to assist those riders develop their skills.  Information is presented by qualified physiotherapist and RDA coach, Jill Shelton and other presenters from disability organisations.

OTC Training Workshop - check the dates for our next Orientation workshop.  Includes everything you need to know from disabilities to horse care!

A regular program of training is offered each year.  Check your weekly "Chaff email newsletter and the "Events" tab in the main menu for upcoming courses or contact the Coaching and Volunteer Coordinator,    Karen Aspery on (08)8331 1833.
